In the center of this piazza is the Mausoleum of Emperor Augustus and contains both his ashes as well as those of others in the Julio-Claudian dynasty. The neighborhood surrounding it was razed in the 1930s and rebuilt – only the church of San Rocco and San Girolamo dei Croati were kept from the wrecking ball. In 2020, a redevelopment project was started which finished in 2025, turning it into an organic, harmonious, and accessible space, connecting ancient, modern, and contemporary Rome in one design.
Nearby is the Ara Pacis, an altar dedicated to the Pax Romana and commissioned by the Roman Senate to honor Emperor Augustus’ return to Rome.
