Next up on our grand tour of Rome is the Foro Italico. This sports complex, originally known as Foro Mussolini when it was built in the 1920s and 30s, was originally designed and built in order to win the 1940 or 1944 Olympic Games. (I’ve seen conflicting information as to which.) The forum is decorated with 60 statues representing different sporting activities. Each statue was donated by a different Italian province. The Foro not only comprises this stadium, but also the Stadio Olimpico, Stadio dei Marni, the headquarters of the Italian National Olympic Committee, the Stadio del Nuoto (an aquatics center built for the 1960 Olympics), and the Stadio Centrale del Tennis.
