Epiphanies can still happen for grizzled vets

To date, I have run 80 marathons or ultras, about 15 half-marathons, and thousands of cumulative miles more when you add in all of my training runs. Yes, not only am I perpetually learning minor things that help my performance, but I can even come across something which is - for me, anyway - revolutionary. Game changing. An epiphany.

What is this that has me so excited? Is it a new way of thinking or getting focused? (No.) Is it a better fuel source to use during my runs? (No.) Is it some easier way to help me keep the water weight off and stop yo-yo'ing as much as I do in any given week? (Alas, no.)

So what is it? An app. More specifically, it is a data screen that you can install on your smart watch, assuming you have a compatible model, which I do!

Go to https://racescreen.org to download it into your Garmin Connect IQ and sync up to your watch. Then, make sure you adjust one of your data screens in your watch to display only 1 field, because this race screen needs the full watch-face to show you all the data you need:

  • Current (lap) pace
  • Average pace
  • Total elapsed time
  • Distance run (which you can even adjust via the lap button as you pass mile markers)
  • Predicted finish time (which adjusts accordingly if you use the lap button feature, too)
It even shows HR and cadence (though I don't find much utility in those while running).

Being able to see this for oneself is fantastic. But being a pacer? This is next level, putting all of the information I need at my fingertips without even having to think about switching screens.
